"I am not the only woman with it and I will not be the last one either." Were the words my mother told me as she shared the lastest news about her health situation. When I saw her last July in Puerto Rico the last thing I thought was that as I hugged, kissed and laughed with her, she was suffering from breast cancer. Not that she was hidding it from me, she didn’t even knew about it.
See in market driven countries, where even health is a commodity, the poor are only the one who pay the highest price because of their small acquisitive power, they pay with their own lives. In the early 90’s Puerto Rico the health system moved from a public service to a privatized one. Private companies in order to save on medical bills give a very mediocre service, fixing everything with painkillers and very delayed doctor appointments. My mother is another victim of the privatized system. Her mammogram exam were not scheduled regularly and now their is no option but to do a complete mastectomy.
